Groceries：日本人の食材の買い方

When the Japanese shop for food, they are usually buying what will be eaten that day or the next. They like their food fresh here but also have less space to store it with smaller refrigerators. An excellent side effect of this is quicker check out lines at the store. Most stores require you to bag your own groceries as well. Some stores do not even provide free bags. For these stores, if you did not bring your own bags, you are charged a small fee per bag. This is one of Japan's many attempts to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly lifestyles.

日本人と海外の人には、食材の買い物の仕方に大きな違いがあるようです。

日本人はその日に使ったり、翌日に使う食材のみを購入し、新鮮なうちに食べるというイメージを外国人は持っているようです。確かにアメリカにいるころは　肉、アイスクリーム、野菜などたくさんのものを一気に大量買いしていたなぁと思いだしました。

でも、これは海外に比べて、日本の冷蔵庫が比較的小さい為に、食材を入れるスペースが足らないからなのかもしれないです。

買う食材が少ないこともあって、自分で商品をスキャンするという「セルフ精算レジ」というのも日本にはあるのです。これも日本独自の文化なのでしょうか？
