Bath tubs in Japan are not just used for the occassional long relaxing bath time as many are in the US or other countries.  For a typical Japanese family, the bath tub will be scrubbed down clean everyday, filled with steaming hot water, and covered with an accordion looking roll out cover to help maintain the hot tempurature.  The first person will then come in, rinse off their important parts, and soak in the tub.  After soaking for a little bit, they will get out and wash off with soap and a handheld shower, usually while squating down onto a small little stool made for the bath.  After rinsing off all of the soap, they'll then get back into the bath tub for a final soak before getting out.  Afterwards, the next person will get in and repeat the same process using the same bath water.  The Japanese believe that filling the bath tub with new water after each person is very wasteful, especially since they rinse off before getting in and insist on absolutely no soap getting into the bathtub.  

 
Below is a picture of a very basic traditional Japanese bathroom.  The shower area and the tub are separate but still in the same room.  The entire room is tiled and has a door that closes, so it's ok for the water to splash anywhere.

日本人にとって「お風呂」というのは、アメリカや他の国の時々行くリラックスをするためのものとは違い、特有な文化なんだろう。どんなものか紹介したいと思います。


日本ではほとんどの家が、毎日バスタブを洗い、お湯を張る。そして、お湯が冷めないようにアコーディオンカーテンのようなフタをします。


どのようにして入るかというと、最初の人がまず入ってきて、大事なところをお湯で軽く洗い、バスタブにつかる。そして、しばらくお湯につかったあと、バスタブの外に出て、小さいお風呂用のいすに座り、石鹸を付けて洗い、シャワーで石鹸を落とす。石鹸を洗い流したあと、もう一回バスタブの中に入る。（お風呂に先につからずに、先に洗ってから湯船につかり、そのまま出るという家庭もある）


次の人は、同じことを繰り返すのだが、同じお湯を使うのだ。というのは、日本人は毎回毎回人が入るたびにお湯を入れ替えるというのは水の無駄遣いだとおもっているからだ。特にバスタブに入る前に石鹸を洗い流しているから綺麗だろうという考えだ。


上の1枚目の写真は日本の一般的な風呂場の写真。同じ風呂場にバスタブとシャワーを浴びるところがあり、部屋はタイルで覆われていて、ドアを閉めることができるので、水が飛び散っても大丈夫。
